We have looked at a number of golf specific jackets in the past, and always have liked the products we have seen from Sunice. Our most recent Sunice review was of the Hurricane Byron jacket. Today we are going to take a look at an update of the Sunice Ultimate Jacket (dubbed the Ultimate Jacket V2) as well as a women’s jacket, the Sophia.

Our Thoughts

I was so excited when I received my new Sunice jacket, the black Sophia from the Hurricane collection. I tried it on as soon as I got home and was immediately impressed with the perfect fit and style. I wore it that night as it was pouring rain and I needed rain gear. I was pleased that at how effectively it kept me warm and dry. I received several compliments from co-workers on how sharp the jacket looked.

We had a golf outing at the school that I work at and it was a blustery day with a slight rain persistent through the first five holes. I wore multiple layers with the top layer being my new jacket. I could move easily in the jacket and it posed no hindrance to my golf swing. Once again it kept me dry and warm as well. Although initially I had difficulty finding the pockets, once I found them I was excited by all that I could put in my pockets. Wearing the Sunice contributed to fun day on the links when I could have been frozen and wet!

I recently wore my new jacket while participating in the Philadelphia Half Marathon. When I left the hotel at 6am for a 7am start, it was quite cold. I was very glad that I had thrown on my Sunice Sophia jacket even though I had not worn it for any of my training runs. I knew that it was incredibly comfortable and provided great flexibility while playing golf, so I knew I would be able to move well in it while running 13.1 miles. I also loved the pocket space as I wanted to carry a Clif bar, my cell phone to meet up with my husband after the race and my hotel key. I was not disappointed. I was incredibly comfortable running in the jacket and it kept me very warm. Actually I was so warm that I had to take the jacket off way through the race and tie it around my waist. Fortunately it is incredibly lightweight and did not affect my run at all.

I have been thoroughly impressed with the new Sunice Sophia coat while going to work in a rain storm, golfing on a cold and rainy day and running a marathon. I would highly recommend this jacket for any woman who is looking for a stylish rain/wind jacket that is incredibly comfortable, has lots of pocket space and allows for much flexibility.

The Nike SQ Hybrid at Address

Over the past few months, we have had a chance to have a close look at a lot of clubs in the 2008 line of Nike golf equipment. From the Nike Sumo 5900 driver to the Nike Slingshot 4D irons, we have continually been impressed. Today we will be having a closer look at the Nike Sumo Squared Hybrids. These hybrids promise pinpoint accuracy and ample forgiveness.

Background

Ever been stuck with over 200 yards to the green and a tough lie? All alone, in the middle of the rough? Introducing the Nike SQ SUMO² Hybrid, a marvel of science (geometry in particular) to stand beside you in the most difficult of situations.

SQ SUMO² Hybrid Profile
Square head design, generous offset and extreme perimeter weighting make this Nike Golf’s highest MOI hybrid ever. Designed to deliver exceptional stability at impact and produce high launching soft landing shots.

Hot Cryo Steel Face
The lightweight face is thicker in the middle and progressively thinner at the edges, resulting in a more consistent ball speed, maximum distance and increased forgiveness across the clubface.

Nike PowerBow Weighting
The square Nike PowerBow design strategically positions weight low and to the perimeter. The resulting high MOI and low CG produce a very forgiving and stable head at impact.

Look, Feel and Performance

It was a big weekend. I was returning to my alma mater for my 15th Reunion and was arriving a day early to play in their annual golf tournament. A scramble format, I was paired with my husband and a classmate that I hadn’t seen in 15 years and I knew we were going to have a fun time. My only concern was how my golf game would hold up. My game has improved considerably since I started playing with the Nike Slingshot 4D irons, but I have continued to struggle off the tee as well as with shots over 150 yards.

The moment I stepped up to the first tee I knew I had a big decision to make. I could either use my driver which I’ve never been very successful with in the past or bring out my new Nike SQ Sumo 2 Hybrid 20 degree (3 iron) which I hadn’t had a chance to try yet. Since it was a scramble and the guys could choose not to take my drive, I decided to give the SQ Sumo 2 Hybrid 20 degree (3 iron) a shot and I hit a beautiful, high draw right down the middle. The moment I put the club in my hands I knew it was going to be good. Similar to the Nike Slingshot 4D irons, there is just a confidence that comes with using these clubs.

Yet again Nike has come out with an incredible club with the SQ Sumo 2 Hybrids. I’ve played with a different brand of hybrids before and I never felt comfortable using them out of the rough. While playing with they Nike hybrids, I didn’t hesitate when I was in the rough to use them and I was not disappointed. I stepped up to the ball confidently and was astounded at the both the distance and trajectory out of the rough. Playing with these hybrids I’ve just enhanced my game even more! I’ve used the SQ Sumo 2 Hybrids (both 20 and 23 degree – 3 and 4 iron) several times since the golf outing and I’ve had similar results. I’m confident whenever I step up to hit the ball and am rarely disappointed. An incredibly forgiving club, even a mishit with these clubs travels a good distance and provides a decent next shot. I am starting to rely on the SQ Sumo 2 Hybrids a little too much though as I’m using them off the tee, in the rough and in the fairway. They’ve become my go-to clubs for any distance over 150 and they usually provide the desired result. I have been incredibly impressed with these clubs and recommend them for any woman who is looking for a hybrid that provides great distance and accuracy as well as confidence whenever you bring it out of your bag.

Specifications

Where to Buy

The Nike SQ Sumo Squared Hybrid can be found in just about any pro shop or golf retail store for a price of just around $150. Given that some hybrids seem to be creeping up toward the $200 range, this is quite a bargain for the technology involved. You can also find them used in the $100-$125 range on eBay.

Heading up to the first tee I knew that I felt incredibly comfortable but was wondering if these shirts could survive the wear and tear of the course. I was not disappointed. From my first drive to my last putt, the shirts felt awesome. The shirts felt so soft to the touch that I was sure that they would make me sweat profusely or hinder my range of motion, but I was pleasantly surprised. These Callaway shirts felt light and airy and did not cause me any embarrassing sweat marks. I was so comfortable and confident not only in my appearance, but in the way that I felt sporting this fashionable piece of golfing attire.

Spring has finally arrived for me! After a long winter without any golf, I finally got in 27 holes this weekend. The motivation for this early and cold round was a set of beautiful new Nike Slingshot 4D irons that have been staring at me for about 3 weeks. These impressive new clubs arrived one day and I’ve been itching to play with them since I eyed their shiny new faces with fancy yellow coloring. I initially started swinging them in the house waiting for the day when I could finally try them out and see for myself if they were as fantastic as they looked.

Waking up early on Saturday morning, I walked the dog as the sun rose tempting me to think about a round of golf. Although there was a chill in the air, I figured since the sun was out and shining brightly it might be warm enough to golf. I asked my husband if he wanted to play and he was packing our clubs in the car before I could finish my sentence. He, unlike me, will play in temperatures usually reserved for ice skates not golf shoes!

I dressed as if I was about to head into a blizzard wearing long underwear, pants, a turtleneck, a sweatshirt, a wind jacket, and a winter hat. I figured I was definitely prepared for the chilly temperatures and excited to start the 2008 golf season. On the first tee, I decided to use my 3 wood even though it had been a long winter with little to no golf for me. It showed on the first shot as I duffed the ball which only traveled about 20 yards. Chalking it up to new season nerves, I remembered what had brought me out on this cold day and grabbed the shiny new Nike 5 iron from my bag for my second shot. The feeling that I got when I hit that ball was something that I had felt too infrequently in my golf career. I stepped back and said, “wow” as I watched the ball travel about 150 yards down the middle of the fairway landing just short of the green. No longer worried about being rusty after my winter laziness, I was just excited to hit these new Nike irons and hope that every shot felt like that! I was not to be disappointed.

We only played nine holes because, even with my extra layers, the wind got the best of me. That being said, I was actually playing pretty well. I was amazed at how quickly I had adjusted to this new set of Nike irons. I had only swung them a few times in my living room and I was hitting the ball better than I had in my life. The Nike irons are very light and I just felt immediately comfortable using them. Even when I didn’t hit the ball well, it still wasn’t a horrible shot. It was amazing how confident I felt hitting each new iron in my bag. I didn’t hem and haw about which club to use and just went up and hit them. The five iron was traveling 150 yards which is a very good distance for me. The ball rose beautifully from the club head when I made contact and it felt great. It made me realize how much I truly missed golf and I wondered why I didn’t start playing with this amazing set of irons three weeks sooner. To me they were the miracle clubs…they were making me into a decent golfer!

My husband and I ventured out again today and played 18 holes. It was a beautiful day and the course was nearly empty…it felt like our own private country club. The Nike irons helped my game again although my driving and putting were very inconsistent as I went from parring one hole to getting a double bogey on the next. My husband had his gps system and would ask me if I wanted yardage marks and I declined just getting a feeling that I was choosing the right Nike iron. It sounds weird, I know, but I honestly felt incredibly confident with every Nike iron that I put in my hands except for the sand wedge, but that’s my own battle with the bunker. With these new irons in my bag, I hope to practice bunker shots and become more comfortable with the sand wedge. I also hope that as the summer progresses and I use the clubs more frequently I’ll gain some distance as well as consistency. I’ve set some ambitious goals for myself this summer and using these Nike irons I have confidence that I’ll not only achieve these goals, but surpass them. Golf is such a mental game that I feel that I’m already ahead of the game having such confidence in my clubs. Now I need to get the same confidence with my hybrids and woods and I’ll be all set to really start shooting some low scores on the course.

Conclusion

The Nike Slingshot 4D irons are a set of game improvement irons for the player not looking for a super high MOI set of clubs. If you are a very high handicapper, looking for the most forgiving set of irons, have a look at our review of the Nike Sumo iron set.
