We have not reviewed many golf bags here on The Deep Rough, but today we will be taking a close look at a new stand bag from Bag Boy, the Bag Boy Clip-Lok Stand Bag. This bag is fitted with a neat little system to lock your clubs in place, to reduce club chatter.
Background
The new Clip-Lok stand bag combines Bag Boy’s popular Clip-Lok Technology, which provides maximum club protection and eliminates club contact, with a lightweight stand bag design that is perfect for golfers who love to walk the course without the clatter.
Clip-Lok System
First of all, let’s look at the most compelling reason to select this bag, the Clip-Lok system. There are plenty of bags out there with interesting club sorting systems (Ogio WoodE, Mizuno Kabuki), but none I have seen offer a locking mechanism for your clubs. The Clip-Lok is basically an inch long cylindrical channel which you can ’snap’ your golf shafts into. The process is quite simple, and pretty effective. The material you snap into is a rubber/plastic like material that should not damage your graphite or steel shafts in any way. The system is pretty effective at keeping your clubs in place, though, I still found that the club heads would sway back and forth, occasionally hitting each other. Your grips, however, should remain separated, so you’ll be putting a little less wear and tear on those. As long as you are methodical about snapping the shafts back in after each shot, this system should do a decent job of keeping your clubs a little safer.
Stability
At first glance, the Bag Boy stand legs appear to be quite beefy and stable. However, when deployed, the bag has a little ‘play’ in it. You can get it to sway a little if you press down on it. That is not to say that I feared the bag falling over, but it just seemed a little ‘loose’ compared to the Ogio stand bags I have been using the past few years. That may be a good thing though. If I have one complaint about Ogio bags, it is that the leg mechanism seems to fail prematurely. Given they are quite rigid, perhaps a lot of strain is placed on the joints. The Bag Boy may prove to be sturdier in the long run. I’ll have to report back on that in the future! All that said, the legs deploy effortlessly.
Storage
There are a TON of pockets on this bag. So many that you’ll be wondering where you put all your stuff when you get out on the course! There is a great little felt lined valuables pouch for your wallet, watch, cell phone or whatever you do not want getting scratched. The insulated bottle sleeve did a great job of keeping a 20oz water bottle cool. There is a generous compartment for balls in the ‘usual’ spot on the lower part of the bag as well. If you like to sort and pack a lot of gear in your carry bag, you’ll definitely find enough storage space in this bag. There is also a nice beefy clip for a small towel or your range finder. In the pictures here, my wife’s clubs are loaded in the bag, and her towel is quite long, so we had to latch that onto another spot, otherwise the towel would be lying on the ground when the bag was in ’stand’ position.
Carrying the Bag
The shoulder e harness this bag is very well padded. The harness can be adjusted in several locations to provide a good fit. Though, my wife felt the straps were a little wide for her shoulders, so if you have a narrow frame, you may want to check that out. The part of the bag which rests on your back is also well padded. All in all, it was a very comfortable bag to sling over your shoulders. I do not have the actual empty weight of the bag, but it did feel a little lighter than my Ogio Grom bag, so figure it is middle of the pack in terms of weight. And well, if you load up all those pockets…watch out!
Conclusion
If you are looking for a lot of storage space and are looking to protect your club heads, this bag may be a great option for you. The bag is available in five different color schemes, though I thought the blue/white combo we received was quite nice looking. The Bag Boy Clip-Lok bag can be had for $139.95 from In the Hole Golf, which is quite reasonable.
