SwingSpeed Radar - First Impressions

I got my hands on a swing speed measuring device from Sports Sensors, Inc. The SwingSpeed Radar device measures both your swing speed and tempo in a small, very easy to use package. Just set it up near where you are hitting the ball, and swing away normally. The device detects your takeaway and the moment of ‘impact’ to report a swing time that you can use to standardize your tempo. It can also report the swing speed in either mph or km/h.

I used it a bit in my living room. Of course, one is paranoid about hitting something, the ceiling, the dog, a lamp…but once you get over that, and can start swinging freely, the device is very useful. My initial, paranoid swings with a PW were about 40-50 mph. Loosened up a little, and I got nice 3/4 swings in the 70-75 mph range. Full, well balanced/controlled swings where I still ‘went after it’ ended up around 85 mph. I tried to swing all out, as hard as I possibly could, and that generally resulted in a lower swing speed, 70 range…goes to show you, swing smoothly and in balance…not only will it help your accuracy, it will increase your swing speed. However, the best I could hit going after it, was 100mph, with the pitching wedge. I am really not sure what that translates into in terms of distance on the actual course. Nonetheless, when I play, an easy PW swing is generally in the 125-135 yard range, depending on the conditions.

At $149.95, the SwingSpeed Radar is quite a bargain. Look forward to a more detailed review in the near future. At the moment I am working with the Tour Tempo device and measuring my results with the SwingSpeed radar. The radar, in tandem with the Tour Tempo has been great for helping me work on that smooth, balanced swing with a higher swing speed.
