The Golf Swing

My Impetus – Not a Bread Knife

So on Monday I was cutting an English Muffin and not adhering to Rachel Ray‘s rule of curling up your fingers. Nice little gash across my left thumb. Luckily, my knives are quite sharp, so it made a very nice clean cut.

So here I am, with a cut straight across my left thumb…and just to show you how obsessed I am with golf, I decide to try and hit the driving range Monday night, it the 100 degree humid weather we had here. Warmed up with some pitches, then worked on some low draws with the 7 iron. Then broke out a Nickent 4DX Driver and took some rips with that. Finger starts hurting. Take a few rips with the r7 425. Finger hurts more. Hmm…take my glove off, yep, my thumb is bleeding all over the place. Lovely :) So that range session was over. The good news is, I was able to hit about 5 straight -> slight draw drives in a row before the thumb said no mas. I was focusing on hammering the butt end of the club into the ball. I was half expecting to slice the ball about 100 yards. But I seemed to be able to square up the club at impact, and really generate a ton of club head speed.

On Tuesday, my buddy Tim and I hit the range at Quail Brook. He has a HiBORE XL that I have borrowed repeatedly in the past few weeks. Lately, every time I hit the range, I generally warm up with pitches/chips then hit about 20 or so knockdown draws. My ball flight is generally very high, so when the wind kicks up I run into problems. I am starting to feel quite comfortable with the knockdowns, so hopefully I am better prepared for the next windy day on the links. Lucky for me, on Wednesday it was quite windy at the range, so was perfect for practicing these shots. Toward the end of the session I hit a few balls with the HiBORE XL, and wow. I really do love that club. It feels so solid at impact and is so forgiving. The first hit I had with it carried about 250, up hill, into strong wind. Not bad! Thumb was a lot better, not so sore, no OJ Simpson golf glove.

Hopefully I’ll get 9 in tomorrow night over at Green Knoll and then 18 in Sunday morning at Spooky Brook.

Well that’s about it for this little stream of consciousness entry. Be sure to check out his new blog, My Impetus. He’ll be writing about his golfing experience along with his love of photography and SCUBA.
