The Golf Swing

18 Holes at Quail Brook

Played 18 holes today over at Quail Brook with my buddy Tim, carded a 79. It was quite hot for this time of year, the thermostat hit about 94 when I was leaving the course. The front 9 at Quail Brook is a pretty easy walk, but the back nine will kick your butt.

I was not putting particularly well, don’t really remember hitting any putts greater than 5 feet. However, I was hitting my tee shots and approach shots quite well. Last night I spent about an hour with a new Eidolon 56 degree wedge, practicing controlling my wedge swing, taking aim at specific targets. The practice seemed to pay off, as I was generally pretty accurate with the wedges/low irons.

I did not carry my driver or any fairway woods. Just my 3-PW, 52, Eidolon 56, and a Nickent 4dx Hybrid 3. I only used the Nickent a couple times, but had a couple nice shots with the club. With a little more practice at the range with that club, I could really see myself bagging one full-time. Once I get some range time with the club, I’ll provide a more detailed review.

All in all, great day. My friend Tim hasn’t played much in the past year or so, and has been getting pretty frustrated with his game. I gave him a couple little tips to try and get him ‘back to basics’. I had him focus on just taking half swings, focus on turning, and not really getting his ‘hands’ involved or bending at the elbows. Take it to parallel and swing through smooth. It worked quite well for him, I really don’t remember seeing him hit the ball so well. It’s really a tip anyone could use when you feel your swing is failing you. A second tip..or swing thought I gave him was to accelerate through the ball. To try and make the loudest ‘whoosh’ past the ball, not before it. He was always one to release early, and violently at the ball. Today, he was nice and smooth, and simple. If he keeps at it, I think he could start shooting some nice scores. And perhaps he could take advantage of free lesson month from the PGA…he has a few days ;)
