Congrats to Zach Johnson, some may say that Tiger ‘lost’ it, but you held up under some pressure there toward the end, and played beautifully all day. That last chip on 18 was quite ‘masterful’.
I spent most of Sunday watching the Masters both online (Amen Corner Cam and Masters Extra) as well as the glorious CBS HD coverage. After watching the Amen Corner Cam Feed for about 3 hours, squinting at every detail…who is that? I can’t really tell…is that a ball? ….then flipping on the HD coverage on CBS…wow….what a difference. If you do not already have a HDTV, do yourself a favor and get one!
I do like watching Tiger, he does some amazing things. However, it was certainly nice to see one of the ‘newer’ faces get a win. Hard to say a ‘young’ guy since he and Tiger are almost the same age. What’s up with Tiger and the last day of a tournament though? When he goes in with a lead, you can say good night, not bother watching. But to come from behind? He seems to get more visibly frustrated with himself when things aren’t going the right way, almost acting like a little kid at times. He threw a little hissy fit there at his caddy after that approach shot on 17, and you could just see Steve walking away like, whatever. Very strange.
Anyway, was a great weekend of watching golf. I hit the driving range for a bucket of balls on Saturday afternoon, which was some good fun, due to the cold weather here recently I haven’t had a chance to play much for a while. I hit some irons, but mostly focused on trying to gain some confidence with my fairway woods/hybrid. For whatever reason I have some sort of mental block with them. I can hit 20 nice 5 irons in a row, then pickup my hybrid and top/slice/hook the heck out of the ball.
With my irons I always seem to have a good ‘feel’ for where the club is in my backswing and downswing. With the hybrid or fairway wood…I’m not sure, it just never feels right. Even at impact, I may hit a nice ball that is perfect in terms of trajectory and distance, but it just never feels as nice as a well struck iron shot. Perhaps it’s just the clubs I have. Perhaps I just need more practice with them. I did eventually hit some nice 3 wood shots with some consistency, but they never did feel ‘right’. Right now I have a Callaway X Tour 15* Fairway Wood, a 2006 Nike Sasquatch 15*, and a 16* TM Rescue Dual Hybrid. Anyone have suggestions for other fairway woods/hybrids I should give a shot? I am looking for something with better feel at impact. I have an r7 425 Driver which I do hit pretty well. Love the feeling of that club.
Finally, one more thing on the Masters. What was up with the Winged Foot question posed to Phil Mickelson?

Yah- that question to Phil was worst ever- then to say “I don’t think so either” – what an idiot.
I’m not a big Phil fan- but he shouldn’t have to deal with that crap.
Sometimes when they ask those questions of Phil or Tiger, I just cringe. Tiger is intimidating, too. It’s crystal clear when he doesn’t like a question, which seems to be more than half the time. You can see/hear Peter Kostis (or the others) immmediately back off. I’m convinced their producers/directors feed them certain questions. They have to ask them, although in many instances they appear to be uncomfortable.
First off I just want to say I really Like this website. Some nice info on here and i did have your Amen Corner cam up on here as I was watching the Masters as well.
As for Phil Mickelson, I was there for his spectacular finish at Winged Foot 2006, he played to make par and not to win the tournament. If you look at him and compare him to when he was winning he’s not doing anything really different besde catching a couple of breaks here and there, but it seems like Tiger catches breaks all the time. Tiger, this last week it just seemed like he wasn’t able to put his six iron on from 240 yards and hit every par 5 in two… poor him.
Back to Phil, people seem to forget he won a month or so ago at Pebble Beach, then the next week he finishes bad (but still finished second) and all of a sudden it’s some Big Winged Foot problem according to the media. I’m sure it’s not a problem to Phil, and if the media wants to see him play well again they need to stop bringing it up, ONE HOLE DOES NOT MAKE YOUR CAREER.
HYBRIDS:
SONARTEC.COM
The club you are looking for is the MD, it’s a Hybrid made for players and the IRod Shaft that comes stock is made for the club specifically. Also their SS 3.5 (for better players) and 2.5 (shallow face) Are great clubs and go a long ways.
In hybrid what you are getting is a higher ball flight. The club naturally is designed to go higher. So you may just want to try the same steel shaft you have in your irons. You don’t need a graphite shaft in your hybrid unless you want to hit it extra extra high, and if it still isn’t going high enough, then my friend you need to invest in a 7-wood
POINT OF INTEREST:
Optical illusions come into effect and get worse with longer clubs ESPECIALLY OFF THE TURF. The further away you are from the ball the more of an illusion you get that the ball on your address is on the sweet spot on the club. In short the illusion is worse with a Driver than a wedge. You may just be setting up on the heel if in fact you are hitting it on the heel.
Do like charlie Hoffman does and draw a line down the middle of the face of your club with a sharpie (Hoffman does this w/ his driver). This helps with the set up, it is also legal for tournament play. Linging up with the marks on the top of your club only works when your eyes are on top of the ball.
Justin,
Thanks for the tips and your thoughts on Phil, and I’m glad you enjoy the site!
I think part of the problem is people seem to expect constant miracles on the course from Tiger and even Phil. Tiger finishes second at the Masters with his B game and it’s the end of the world. Phil wins a tournament this season, yet he’s still feeling the effects of Winged Foot. The media needs something to write about I suppose…they can’t just go posting videos of guys hitting balls through plywood every day
Thanks for the tips on the hybrids. Height never seems to be an issue for me even with a 2/3 iron. I always seem to get the ball up pretty high (royal precision rifles in my irons). I would like to be able to hit the hybrid when I am in the rough or a fairway bunker from distance, where I either need to cut through the rough or get the ball up quick out of the bunker. As for the 3 wood, it would just be nice to have another ‘long’ option from the tee that I could get into the fairway more consistently. But perhaps I should just concentrate on being more accurate with the Driver.
Interesting point about the optical illusion though, I had never heard or thought of that!
