So, last year, when I originally thought about getting Mizuno MX-23 irons, I had bought a single 6 iron from ebay. It was in nice condition, and was shafted with a Project-X steel shaft. I hit it a few times on the range, took it with me out on the course a few times, and absolutely fell in love with the feel and the ball flight. Then I made my decision to buy a full set of MX-23s. I found a nice used set on ebay, that was fitted with Royal Precision Rifle Shafts. I didn’t think much of it, how much difference could the Project-X make?
I got the clubs, and played with them for the duration of 2006. The feel was the same, silky smooth when you hit that sweet spot…like butter some people say. The ball flight, however, wasn’t quite as I had experienced with the 6 iron shafted with the Project-X…the ball went much higher, with a much ’shorter’ apex. The ball flight with the Project-X, was amazing to watch, it rose for a bit, then seemed to pierce forever like a bullet barely dropping, then at the last minute, it would simply drop from the sky at its intended target. I thought about having the set reshafted with the Project-Xs, but, the cost involved really is too great to justify for me.
Even now, with the MP-33 set I have, I could not find a reasonably priced set with the Project-X shafts. Callaway seems to have recognized the superb quality of these shafts and is now fitting their new X-20 tour irons with them as ’stock’. No need to worry about how much more it will cost for the Project-X, as they come standard. You can, of course, choose other shafts, but at a longer lead time, and increased cost.
I love the MP-33s, and I do not forsee myself switching over to the X-20s anytime soon, if ever..heck I haven’t even seen them in person. However, if you are in the market for new clubs, you should do yourself a favor and check them out. If for no other reason than to experience the Project-X shafts!

I see you must visit BSG and Golfwrx, if you keep an eye out there sometimes you will come across a set pulls that someone doesn’t like. Cheapest way I’ve come across of finding them. Great shafts
Yeah, two great sites. Though BSG just seems to fuel my desire to buy new clubs
Thanks for the tip Kiwi!
