Golfing in High Winds

Ok, so we played 9 holes yesterday at Quail Brook. Probably not such a great idea, as well…there were 20-30 mph wind gusts all day. Swirling ones at that. Apparently I need to learn how to hit a low ball. I never practice such a shot, as well, usually when I play the max wind you have around here may be 5-10mph…which doesn’t make a huge difference. But those big gusts. Wow. One par 3, 160 yards, I hit an 8 iron, like I normally would. The ball just kept climbing…and climbing. Then it seemed to start back toward me. Oh no..yes…it is coming back…it ended up about 20-30 yards in front of the tee.

I was hitting the ball quite nicely though. And it was actually kind of fun. Watching the ball do all sorts of crazy things in the wind. The driver, 3 wood, and hybrid stayed in the trunk!

So, time to learn how to hit a low ball consistently.

One par 4, I was right on the 150 marker, normally this would be a 9 iron, but the wind was quite ferocious at the time. So, I said, ok, I understand how I SHOULD hit a low 7 iron, and I setup for it, ball back in the stance a little, swing back about half way, committed to keeping a short follow through. Low and behold, it stayed pretty low, and bounce up to the fringe. I tried this a few other times with varied success. Definitely something I need to practice at the range.
