Weekend Trip and Tiger Crushes the PGA

Well the weekend trip down to the Baltimore area was an ok trip. Saturday shore traffic turned out to be horrendous, as a trip that would normally take 2.5 hours, ended up taking 5. So that wasn’t so much fun. Then, to top it off, the Jays were down 7 runs in the first inning…ended up losing 15-0. But hey, it was a trip with my fiancĂ©e, and we had some great seats!

In any event, we ended up coming back to New Jersey early, so golf in Delaware or Maryland was out of the question. Sunday afternoon (after realizing there was no way anyone was going to even make Tiger break a sweat) we headed over to Flanders Valley for the twilight rate of $12 and got 9 holes in. It certainly wasn’t my best performance. Things started off quite well as I was on in 2 on the 2nd hole, a 500 yard par 5. But, was downhill from there. It was my first experience with a Callaway X Fairway wood, as well as my first, serious, putting experience with a Rossa Monza Corza Putter.

Callaway X Tour Fairway Wood

I picked this club up from ebay, new for $135, shipped. Couldn’t go wrong there. I had been interested in trying this club out for a while, and haven’t been completely thrilled with the SasQuatch fairway wood lately. Yes, I have been playing with just irons for the most part, but there are certainly times when a 250+ hit is necessary.

So, getting the tour version of this club probably wasn’t the greatest idea in the world, as I am certainly no where near consistant enough to take advantage of it. The club head is quite small…significantly smaller than my previous 5 wood (TaylorMade V-Steel). But, I figured, I could only get better with the club, as you really need to put a good swing on the ball to have it generate a good result. Lucky for me, on that par 5 I did. I hit the ball about 275, straight down the middle. Nice low, slightly rising trajectory, and a fair amount of roll.

I will write up a detailed review of this at some point soon, when I’ve had more time to play with it. For now, I’m certainly happy with it, though I’ll need a lot more work with it at the range to get completely comfortable with the club.

Rossa Monza Corza Putter

I love the look of this putter. Compared to the Modena putter, alignment is a dream. The AGSI definitely seems to get the ball up and rolling quickly. The feel off the insert is quite nice as well. My struggle with the putter at this point is judging the speed, especially on long putts. The putters is definitely heavier than the Modena, so I’m guessing that will take some time to adjust to. The greens at Flanders Valley were not in the best shape, it looks like they hadn’t cut them in a while, so it’s tough to tell at this point.

Again, when I’ve had some more time with the club, I’ll try and put together a more detailed review.

I’ve added a few new articles to the Articles section of The Deep Rough, check them out. Some great golf gift ideas as well as some tips on your golf routine:

From the Roller
Alexander over at Golfer’s Delight has a list of some great quotes from Medinah. I was watching the press conferences on The Golf Channel myself this morning, and had to laugh at a few of Tiger’s comments. I liked the one where someone asked if he felt sorry for the other players, that it really wasn’t fair for them. He just grinned, and said no.

Mike over at Perform Better Golf called Tiger’s dominance the other day, and today asks What Happened to Phil? Indeed, I don’t think Dave Pelz will be saying much about Phil being unbeatable again anytime soon! But I do still love his Short Game Bible!
