Courses

Quail Brook and Bamm Hollow

Waking up early on a Saturday morning is generally not fun, unless of course, you have an early tee time! Of course, this past Saturday, I didn’t bother looking outside before taking a shower and getting dressed. Alas, waking up at 5:30 was not such a great idea, as New Jersey was being flooded by the remnants of some sort of Tropical Storm. So, unfortunately, that tee time was cancelled.

Nonetheless, Sunday was a different story. We had an afternoon tee time (no we didn’t have any crumpets ;) ) at Quail Brook, and the weather was quite nice. The front 9 was pretty awful, as I struggled with the driver and my short game, out in 46. But I took a page from Tiger and stuck to my long irons off the tee for most of the back, and came in with a 41. So again, here we are at an 87. The driving issues sorted them selves out by the 17th/18th hole, as I hit a fairly nice, high fade on the last hole (par 4, dogleg right, 420 yards) to about 125…which was nice, because I could hit something with a full swing. The short game issues bothered me though, I had a serious case of the shanks at times, and just never was ‘feeling’ the 50-100 yard shots. This would continue at Bamm Hollow on Monday.

Quail Brook Score Card

One thing I learned…this course kicks my butt. Not so much in a golf sense, but in that it is quite a long walk. The course measures 6,617 yards, however, many of the tees are a lengthy walk from the previous green. This is a municipal course, and I am pretty sure it always has been. I am not sure why it wasn’t setup to be more walker friendly. I can understand the newer resort type golf courses wanting to have the course setup more for riders..as they want to squeeze out all the cash they can get. In any event, it’s certainly a good walk, mucho calories burned.

So, onto Monday afternoon. After work, I had a chance to run over to Bamm Hollow Country Club and play 14 holes or so. The first 5 holes were mostly practice, messing around with the driver and long irons. What I should have done was went to the practice hole and hit 50-100 yard wedge shots…

The remaining 9 holes we played, I ended up shooting a 44, on the Blue Course. For the most part I was hitting the Driver well, a few shots got away right on me, but I had a few beauties. I am really begining to love this r7 425. The trajectory is far more acceptable (compared to the r5 12 degree), and I get a fair amount of roll. The first hole on the Blue Course is a 550 yard dog leg left par 5. It’s about 250-275 yards to the middle of the dog leg. Then it’s a sharp turn left. The corner is guarded by a fairway bunker, and numerous trees. I’ve always just hit it straight away, and if I hit it well, sometimes I would run out of fairway straight away. On this day, I was feeling lucky, and tried to go over the fairway bunker. Success. Somehow the ball found it’s way over the bunker, through the trees, and smack dad in the middle of the fairway. A fairway wood next, put me about 40 yards from the pin, just in the rough. Great I am thinking to myself, nice little pitch, chance at a bird…alas, the shanks come back. The ball scoots way right, and now I scramble to make a bogey. This trend continued. It’s unfortunate, as I put myself in pretty nice position on the par 4s and par 5s, but couldn’t get any GIRs.

On a Deep Rough note, I’ve added a few more interesting articles to the Articles page, check them out:
