So, despite the heat wave, we decided to play on Saturday Morning (Quail Brook) and Sunday Morning (Warrenbrook) this weekend. I had picked up a TaylorMade r7 425 10.5 this week off of ebay, so I was excited to get a chance to try it out on the course.
So Quail Brook, pretty course, quite long for a Somerset County course. The front 9 was relatively open, and not extremely challenging (though, my short game was way off, and I ended up with a 47). The back 9, on the other hand, was an entirely different situation. Much tighter, numerous blind tee shots, and quite long. Couple that with the noon time heat, and it was quite the challenge. Somehow, I managed a 41 on the back, which was remarkable. I hardly can remember the 17th and 18th holes, as I believe I was extremely dehydated at that point. Side note, screw you Arizona and your tainted on course water bottles…thanks for ruining it for us. Bring plenty of water to Quail Brook, as there are no fountains or water coolers on the course. I think we saw the cart gal once on the back 9. So an 88 for the day was acceptable, I just wish I had a better feel of my short game on the front 9, it should have been a low 80’s day. As for the r7, it performed quite well. The 6th hole at Quail Brook is a 515 yard par 5, pretty straight away. I crushed a ball, with a little bit of a tail wind, ended up smack dad on the 200 yard mark, no doubt, best drive of the day by far. I had a couple get away from me to the right, but when I put good swings on it, the club delivered nicely. I definitely love the trajectory, much more managable than the 12 degree r5 I had been carrying.
We have played Warrenbrook many times now, and still love the course. It is a difficult walk, especially in the heat, but we’re getting better at handling all of the hills. We brought plenty of water with us this day, as temps were forecasted to reach the upper 90’s. Thankfully we got ourselves a 7am tee-time, so we were able to beat most of the mid-day heat. Somehow, I managed to shoot an 88 again on this day. I was driving well most of the day (save a few awful swings late in the round), but my approach shots were failing me. I just didn’t have a feel for the pitching wedge/9 iron range shots, also chunked a few 50 yard wedge shots. My putting, on the otherhand, was superb (by my standards). Had a great 12 foot birdie putt to close out the front 9. All in all, a decent day, but I still feel like I should be shooting much lower. It’s always a struggle with consistency.
I will put together a review of the r7 once I’ve had some more time with it!
