This past weekend, my fiancĂ© and I took a trip down to Atlanta, Georgia. The primary reason for the trip was to visit some relatives, but, we also fit in some time for golf…of course!
We stayed at The Marietta Conference Center and Resort in Marietta, GA. I had read many positive reviews regarding the hotel itself, though, there were some negative reviews regarding the adjacent golf course, The City Club - Marietta. As it turns out, my review would be slightly reversed. We thought the hotel itself was acceptable for the price ($99 a night), but nothing spectacular. Nonetheless, we both thoroughly enjoyed the City Club golf course.
The first room we were given faced away from the golf course, and happened to be located next to the elevator…and ice machine. No thank you. They were kind enough to relocate us to a room as far away from the elevator as possible…and incidentally, one with a lovely view of the golf course. According to their website, these rooms are $20 more a night, but we were not up charged for this. The room itself was nice, certainly above what you’d expect from a Best Western/Holiday Inn, though the bed was pretty sub par. The major issue we had was with the service. The staff in the hotel was generally unpleasant, and the food in the hotel restaurant was awful, and ridiculously overpriced. Word to the wise, if you stay in this hotel, there is a great little breakfast place just down Powder Springs road (make a left out of the parking lot, then a couple lights), The Square Bagel, check it out.
We had reserved an 8:50 AM tee time on Saturday. We showed up around 8:20, with hopes of using the driving range a bit, but alas, it was packed with parents trying to give their children lessons in digging large holes at the range. So we putted around a bit, and then were off. It’s a rather short course, but quite picturesque. Many of the tee shots were quite blind, and were into severe doglegs. There was also some substantial elevation change on most of the holes. All in all, I would say it was pretty nice for a public course. The greens were slow, but in good repair. I ended up shooting an 87, which was pretty disappointing. I really should have been able to shoot in the low 80’s here, but, a few awful chips/pitches, lead to a lot of lost strokes.

On Friday, we played at Brookstone Country Club…which was a wonderful experience. I’ll post up that review soon!
